The Origin of Casa Balaguer
The Plot
Viña Guerán is much more than a plot of vines.
It is the starting point. The very place from which, centuries ago, what we now know as Finca Casa Balaguer was founded. It still stands, surrounding the house and winery like a silent guardian of this project’s roots and history.
In this emblematic plot, we work primarily with Monastrell, complemented by a subtle touch of Arcos, an ancient variety full of nuance.
The soil here changes everything: in the lower part, loose sands that promote balanced growth and slow ripening; in the upper part, sedimentary metamorphic limestone rocks that bring structure, tension, and freshness.
The result is a red wine with a refined, luminous, and elegant profile, reminding us that strength doesn’t always come from power, but from purity and precision.
Style
An elegant and fresh red wine, crafted with sensitivity rather than power.
It is Monastrell in its most refined form, born from sandy, breezy soils, where the terroir’s voice takes precedence over the grape’s strength.
Wine Making
Monastrell – Manual harvest in small 20kg crates prior to strict table selection and fermented in concrete vats. 20% whole bunch maceration. Very light, daily punching down of skins during 12-15 days. Pressed and transferred to 500L used oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and further 12 months ageing.
Arcos – Fermented in 1000L oak Tinos with 50% whole bunch. 10 days maceration then lightly pressed and transferred to clay amphora for 10-12 months ageing.
Tasting Note
Viña Guerán is subtle on the nose, with aromas of red and black fruit, dried flowers, fine herbs, and a clean mineral background.
On the palate, it offers pure balance: soft entry, silky texture, polished tannins, and lively acidity that extends the sip with freshness and precision. It finishes with a light, saline sensation that invites another taste.
Pairing
Ideal for dishes with subtle yet characterful flavours: sautéed mushrooms, poultry, seasonal vegetable cuisine, artisanal pastas, or inland rice dishes.
